About Ulrich Burkhalter
Growing up in the small mountain farm of Switzerland has made me who I am today. I’m a country boy at heart that loves God’s and his beautiful creation and using it in my photography. I love capturing nature’s special beauty.
It’s our stories that make us who we are and everyone wants a good story and pictures to go with it.
Being a middle child of 9 rambunctious children on a mountain dairy farm and raising vegetables I needed some space. So I would go into the woods and nature to get my sanity back..... That's where I would learn to appreciate all what the outdoors has to offer
My photographic adventure started when my brothers and I pooled in our money together so we could buy a “click-o-mate” camera for $9.95 Swiss francs to document a school trip to the Alps, back when I was 9 years old. I have been taking pictures ever since.
I started my apprenticeship when I was 15 years old in 1972 and received the degree in Swiss cabinet maker in 1975. I came to America as an exchange visitor through a program from the Mennonite church in 1977-1978. I worked in construction in Goshen, Indiana and Harper, Kansas during this time. I moved to America in 1982, for following 17 years I had my own cabinet shop. Now I’m working in a car factory.
I met my wife, Heidi through pen pal website. Somehow we managed to meet one day, with our commute between Kentucky and Oregon. Well, rest is history with four grown children and their families.
My great passions in life are photography, building boats, hiking outdoors and woodworking. Experiencing other cultures, meeting people from other communities and other countries and seeing the beauty of the world has helped me understand that all of our lives are at once interconnected and individual. It has made me better to appreciate my own home and culture as well as that of the other people I have met along the way. I hope my own photographic contributions will inspire others to do the same.
